If you have no training and someone is seriously injured, please call 911 and follow their directions! But we believe you should take a course to learn how to give effective first aid. In a nutshell, knowing what to look for when assessing a situation and an injured person is important, as well as having a basic set of life saving treatments in your toolbox. Taking an Emergency First Aid course will give you an understanding of the priorities when an emergency happens, and the skills and confidence to be ready to treat a seriously injured person.
Standard First Aid is a higher level certification, and will be acceptable for a larger number of employment situations than just Emergency First Aid. Standard First Aid is a 2 day course compared to Emergency First Aid which is only a 1 day course, so yes, Standard First Aid is more comprehensive. Standard First Aid covers all of the content in Emergency First Aid, but there will be additional knowledge topics that aren’t covered in Emergency First Aid including: Head & Neck Injuries, Poisoning, Environmental Emergencies, and a deeper dive into managing small wounds. There will also be more time to practice and become proficient with using First Aid Skills and you will learn a few additional skills including supporting injuries with splints and slings. Both Standard and Emergency First Aid certification are recognized as acceptable equivalents to OFA Level 1, and if any job requires Emergency First Aid then Standard First Aid will be acceptable too.
‘Emergency First Aid’ refers specifically to the level of First Aid Training - Emergency First Aid is a basic first aid course based on an 8 hour course outline. ‘Level C’ refers specifically to the CPR portion of the training which is integrated into the 8 hour course. CPR C prepares you to perform CPR with AED on adults, children, and babies, and is the highest level of CPR for ‘lay rescuers’, so if an employer requires CPR Level A or B, then CPR will surpass that requirement and be fully acceptable to them! Alert First Aid offers Emergency First Aid with CPR Level C on a regular basis - both as a one day in-class format, or a ‘blended’ format where 4 hours is spent completing an online course and only 4 hours is attended in-class.
The Emergency First Aid & CPR Level C course includes the following materials:
